Worried about choosing the wrong floor plan? Learn how to confidently select a layout that fits your lifestyle now and in the future.
It’s another night in the kitchen cleaning up after a dinner party. You bump into your husband while unloading the dishwasher for what feels like the tenth time, and you feel your patience evaporate.
You have already started the process of building your dream custom home, but now a new fear is rising in the back of your mind: “What if we go through this process and we still get it wrong?”
That question sticks with people.
At LaFollette Custom Homes, we hear it more often than you might think. Once your custom home is built, the layout is what you live with every single day. So how do you know you’re getting it right?
Start With How You Actually Live
Think about your everyday routines. Don’t focus as much on how you wish you lived or what you see in your inspiration photos.
- Where do people naturally gather right now?
- What part of your current home feels tight or frustrating?
- Where do things tend to pile up?
These are the areas where your floor plan needs to work harder.
Walk Through Your Day
This sounds simple, but it’s one of the most helpful things you can do. Just think it through:
- Where do you go first thing in the morning?
- How do you move through the kitchen when you’re cooking?
- What happens when everyone is home at the same time?
If something feels awkward in your head, it’s probably going to feel awkward in real life, too.
Pay Attention to the “In-Between” Spaces
Most people focus on rooms, but the spaces in between matter just as much. The small details, such as the path from the laundry room to the closet, the way the pantry closes, and the flow between the guest bedroom and the bathroom, shape your day more than you expect.
Think a Few Years Ahead
You don’t need to have your entire life planned out before you build your custom home, but it helps to think about your future goals. If you are planning to raise children, host out-of-town guests, or age within your home, it’s going to change your layout decisions.
Don’t Try to Figure it All Out on Your Own
This is where having the right builder really matters. You should be able to ask complicated questions such as:
- “Where do people usually wish they had done something differently?”
- “Is there anything about this layout that might not age well?”
Sometimes it’s a small adjustment that makes a big difference.
Plan Your Custom Home Layout with the Experts
You’re never going to find a “perfect” floor plan, and that’s alright. The goal is to find one that fits your life well enough that you’re more focused on living your life than you are on second-guessing yourself.
